Stream and download royalty chart pdf
Streaming deals have become much more common than royalty deals even among "royalty" companies. The stream offers the same kind of exposure to a mine's production and exploration that a royalty does but it is a simpler contract.
In this article I want to address a couple of issues regarding the difference between royalties and streams. Royalty and streaming companies have provided precious metals investors--and more recently other investors--with outstanding returns due to the compelling nature of the way that these investment vehicles are structured.
However, while royalties and royalty companies have been around for a long time streams are a relatively new phenomenon. But even that is changing. Franco Nevada just made an enormous streaming dealand several of its other recent deals have been streaming deals. Royal Gold also made a large streaming deal a few years back on the Mt. In addition to this trend in the precious metals space a new company--Input Capital OTC: INPCF --which is operating under a similar business model is using streaming rather than royalties.
Now that doesn't mean that royalties are a dying breed, stream and download royalty chart pdf, but there is stream and download royalty chart pdf trend taking place. This might be puzzling for those familiar with the industry.
After all it is the royalty companies that have long-standing and which have created so much share holder value over decades. Furthermore, Chairman of Franco Nevada Pierre Lassonde made a statement regarding the business model which seems to dismiss streaming just before that company made the biggest deal of its life--a streaming deal.
Here's the thing - why the Franco business model is so incredibly powerful - and very few people understand this. None of our stream and download royalty chart pdf do. They don't understand what we have when we create a royalty.
I'm not talking about a stream; I'm talking about a royalty - like the GoldStrike royalty or the Detour royalty. We get a free perpetual option on the discoveries made on the land by the operators, and we get a free perpetual option on the price of gold.
Think about this - if someone hands you a free perpetual option on 6 million acres of land, stream and download royalty chart pdf, and you don't have to put up a penny, don't you think that at some point, you're going to get lucky? Lassonde's Interview with Sprott Asset Management.
This is certainly something that needs some clarification. But first let's look at the fundamental difference between the two sorts of agreements. A royalty is when a mining company agrees to pay a certain part of its revenue, or a certain part of a subset of its revenue to the royalty's owner.
The royalty company never actually sees the gold. A stream is when the mining company actually sells physical metal to the holder of the streaming agreement. Now, going back to Lassonde's quote we see that he's not referring to this distinction. The distinction that interests Lassonde is whether an agreement has perpetual optionality. And Lassonde is right: this stream would be worth more if it didn't expire. So the operative term here is "perpetual optionality.
So with that being cleared up what is the appeal of a stream--as I defined it--relative to a royalty? Why are the new companies streaming companies? Now at first glance the appeal would be leverage. This isn't true for a royalty. And furthermore, what's stopping a company from creating a royalty that generates such leverage? But the stream has a qualitative difference, as we have seen, and that is the fact that with stream and download royalty chart pdf streaming agreement the stream entitles its holder the stream and download royalty chart pdf to actually buy the metal.
This is very straightforward. On the other hand a royalty entitles its holder the right to the proceeds from the sale of a metal. This certainly sounds similar, but it is rife with potential complications and uncertainties, stream and download royalty chart pdf. First there are legal complexities.
The royalty entitles its holder to a certain amount of money, but how much and how is the final amount determined? This shouldn't be much of a problem with a gross smelter return royalty GSR royaltystream and download royalty chart pdf, but most royalties are net smelter return royalties NSR royaltywhich means that the mining company is charging the royalty holder for smelting. While there are standard costs for this royalties often don't clearly stipulate what is to stream and download royalty chart pdf paid.
Second, and this is a greater risk when the royalty is on a larger percentage of single metal from a polymetallic mine, where is the mining company's incentive to maximize the price it realizes on the market? For instance if the mining company is primarily producing copper and it gives the proceeds from much of its gold sales to a royalty company then where is the incentive to invest in a market timer?
It makes more sense to simply sell blindly into the market. The holder of a stream can made its own sell decisions, and it can even accumulate bullion inventory and try to maximize sales. With that in mind it is likely that we will continue to see these companies choose streaming over royalty agreements, and I also suspect that new companies will follow the leads of Input Capital and Sandstorm Gold and choose the streaming route.
